Moisture in Basements: Causes and Solutions

Excess moisture in a basement can not only cause physical damage to your property, but can lead to dangerous health issues as well. This moisture can create the ideal habitat for mold, mildew, and bacteria that can make the occupants of a property ill – especially if a basement is finished before any moisture problems are dealt with.

It is important to understand the cause of the problem and how the water is entering the basement, whether it is through activities such as using a humidifier or cooking, or through ground-water seeping through the foundation. Identifying the symptoms of excess moisture can help diagnose what is causing the issue and how best to address it.

The University of Minnesota provides a list of potential causes and solutions a property owner can take to treat and prevent moisture from entering the basement.
