August Loss Prevention: Atlantic Hurricane Preparation

August marks the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season’s most active period, with storm activity typically ramping up through September. It’s also the right time to prepare your home before severe weather strikes. Strong winds, heavy rain, fallen leaves, and early cold snaps can all increase the risk of property damage if seasonal maintenance is overlooked. A little preparation now can help prevent costly claims later.

Storm Readiness Checklist

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

    • Remove leaves, pine needles, and other debris.

    • Ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation to help prevent water intrusion.

Inspect Trees and Landscaping

    • Trim dead or overhanging branches that could fall during high winds.

    • Remove weak limbs near roofs, driveways, power lines, and vehicles.

Check Your Roof

    • Inspect for loose, missing, or damaged shingles.

    • Repair flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents to help prevent leaks.

    • Address minor issues now before autumn storms arrive.

Secure Outdoor Items

    • Store or anchor patio furniture, umbrellas, grills, and decorative items.

    • Secure garbage and recycling containers before storms.

Review Emergency Preparedness

    • Replace batteries in flashlights and weather radios.

    • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

    • Review your family’s emergency plan and keep emergency contact information readily available.

Prepare Your Vehicles

    • Check tire pressure and tread as temperatures begin to drop.

    • Restock emergency kits with blankets, flashlights, water, and phone chargers.

    • Park vehicles away from trees whenever severe weather is forecast.
